Go and make disciples [Christ followers] of all nations.
Jesus, Matthew 28:19
Why do we serve those in need? Just as every person has a God-given purpose, every church has a God-given mission. That mission is rooted in the love of God. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son [Jesus], that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 It was the “God so loved the world” factor that sent Jesus to die on a cross in payment for the sin and guilt that separates every one of us from God. Furthermore, the ‘whoever believes’ dimension trumps every geographical and cultural barrier. God’s love extends from our neighborhoods to the nations.
Because God’s love, through Christ, offers us forgiveness and eternal life, we do all we can to reach whoever we can with the ‘good news’ or ‘gospel’ of Christ. And because God’s loving heart is moved with compassion for the suffering in our world, we seek to serve human need and lift people up in whatever ways we can. That is why we conduct worship services and preach the gospel and mentor at-risk kids and feed the hungry and invest in going to the ends of the earth to reach the unreached. That is why we are both locally and globally involved. It is all because God loves people and Jesus said ‘Go.’
